Nerima-Quebec Animation Regional Industry Tie-up (RIT) Programme
During this programme, now ended, JETRO coordinated business-matching opportunities for animation companies between Quebec and the Tokyo Ward of Nerima in cooperation with the Quebec Film and Television Council (QFTC).
FY2015-16 Activities
From Nov. 15-21, JETRO organized a delegation of 6 Japanese companies from Nerima to Montreal to further develop business partnering opportunities with Quebec, in partnership with NAA and QFTC. As the final stage of the programme, which JETRO has been working on since 2012, this year focused on one-to-one business matching and building sustainable business alliances between the two regions.
While many of the participants found opportunities and potential partner companies/ organizations to further develop the relationship, some particular successes should noted such as an agreement to conduct test marketing of craft toys in Nerima, a co-production animation deal and the decision for one company to open up a studio in Montreal.
Thank you to everyone involved for their support for this success. JETRO will continue to encourage these projects to move forward.
FY2014-15 Activities
After a successful mission to Quebec and return mission to the Japan Anime Fair 2014 in FY2013-14, JETRO's Regional Industry Tie-up (RIT) Programme continues into FY2014-15 with a mission of Japanese animation companies to Quebec from November 17-21, 2014.
From March 8-13, 2015, as a follow-up to the previous in-coming mission in November 2014, JETRO invited 2 Quebec animation studios, Audio Z and e.d.Films, to Japan to continue their dialogue with Japanese animation companies in the Nerima ward of Tokyo. The 2 companies visited several Japanese studios, such as Studio Kannon and 3S Studio, and animation companies such as MAD BOX and UNIJAPAN to deepen their understanding of Japan’s incentive system for creating films as well as their production process and style.
In addition to those visits, business meetings and workshops were held to discuss how to further develop business between the two countries. Despite differences in production and incentive systems, positive discussions were held on how to work towards Canada-Japan co-productions, taking advantage of each county’s characteristics.
FY2013-14 Activities
On March 21-26, 2014, JETRO dispatched a mission of 4 Canadian animation companies from Quebec to Nerima Ward in Tokyo, and set up business meetings at the site of Japan Anime Fair 2014, under the Regional Industry Tie-Up(RIT) program. As the first opportunity for the 4 Canadian companies to join the program to explore potential business partnerships with Japan, they visited a number of animation studios and galleries in Nerima, one of which represents TOEI Animation, the largest animation company in Japan. Several prospective business agreements were proposed during the visit and JETRO will continue to support the collaboration and development of animation business between both regions. Participating companies from Canada;
- I Can Fly
- Group PV
- Audio Z
- Frima Studio

On November 18-23, 2013, JETRO brought a mission of 5 animation companies from Nerima Ward in Tokyo to Montreal. Nerima is the birthplace of anime in Japan and home to over 90 animation studios including Toei Animation and Mushi Production (Astro Boy TV series). Under its Regional Industry Tie-up (RIT) Programme, JETRO’s aim is to foster business between animation companies in Nerima and Quebec by organizing missions in both directions in cooperation with the Nerima Animation Association and the Quebec Film and Television Council, who signed an MoU cooperation agreement in 2012.
