Business Expanding WiTricity Corporation, a U.S. company that manufactures EV wireless power transfer products, establishes a Japanese subsidiary in Tokyo
Sep 26, 2024
WiTricity Corporation was founded in the United States in 2007 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and has been working on commercializing EV wireless power transfer products using magnetic resonance. The company set up its Japanese subsidiary in Tokyo in May 2024 to promote wireless power transfer projects in Japan, and is a founding member of WEV Alliance.

The company's wireless charging system consists of a wall-mounted box, a ground-installed charging pad, and a receiver on the electric vehicle. No cable connection is required, and charging can be performed by simply parking the electric vehicle on the charging pad. This prevents forgetting to charge and it also achieves the same power transfer efficiency as plug-in charging. In addition, with no moving parts, it is resistant to water, dirt, snow, and corrosion, requiring no maintenance. In particular, as it has an advantage in autonomous driving, the company predicts that fleet vehicles with automated parking and wireless charging capabilities will drive the market in the future. The company's EV wireless charging system also enables bi-directional charging, providing V2H and V2G capabilities just by parking the EV, accelerating the adoption of renewable energy in Japan.
The company has more than 1,300 worldwide patents for wireless charging technology, and is collaborating with Japanese companies based on these technologies. To further promote the spread of EV wireless charging in Japan, the company established its Japanese subsidiary, WiTricity Japan KK, and became one of the founding members of Japan EV Wireless Power Transfer Council (WEV Alliance).
To assist with setting up the company's Japanese subsidiary, JETRO's Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) provided market information, business-matching opportunities, and other support.
