Smart Eye AB, founded in Sweden in 1999, develops artificial intelligence (AI)-powered eye tracking systems. The company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 2016 and currently has over 100 employees.
The company’s Driver Monitoring System (DMS) works for real-time analysis of a driver’s eye and head movement and converts the position and angle of the subject's head, gaze angle, eyelid openness and pupil diameter into numerical values. Understanding the driver’s alertness, attention and intentions and potentially taking actions accordingly.
The company is providing automakers with this system with capabilities like detecting driver fatigue for integration in passenger cars as a solution to contribute to safe driving.
Since the system was first installed in vehicles in 2017, it has been included the automobiles of German, Chinese and Korean makers such as BMW and Geely.
In the future, the company expects it will contribute to the realization of fully automatic driving systems.
Smart Eye’s product has also been widely deployed in research on human-machine interfaces (HMIs), which transmit information between people and devices, in fields other than automobiles. Outside of Sweden, the company has bases in Michigan (US) and Chongqing (China).
The company established Smart Eye Japan Co., Ltd. in Tokyo to strengthen sales to the Japanese automobile industry, starting operations in July 2018. In addition to passenger cars, it has strengthened efforts to see the system applied toward the safe operation of heavy commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks.
To assist with the establishment of the company’s base in Japan, the JETRO Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) provided temporary office space, consultation on tax and labor matters and market information. The IBSC also referred to a local bank and assisted with public relations.
