Established in Bremen, Germany in 1996, WPD Group is engaged in the entire process of developing wind power generation, from selection of installation sites for plants, surveying, development such as that related to acquisition of licenses, facility design and purchase arrangement to construction, plant operation, maintenance and management. In recent years, it has rapidly developed its record of accomplishments in the field of offshore wind power, with the number of its employees expanding to 2,000 in 2018. The operation and maintenance (O&M) business model corresponding to all wind turbine makers handled by Deutsche Windtechnik, an affiliated company with the group, is innovative in that it collectively receives orders for all aspects of the process. Power generators that entrust work to WPD benefit because all they need to do is give instructions to the company, and this has allowed WPD to grow dramatically in the field of wind power generation.

The group expanded to Taiwan in 2003 and the United States in 2007. As of now has installed 2,180 wind turbines in 18 countries around the world, and the installed capacity is over 4,400 MW (megawatts). In 2018, the company won a bid by the Taiwanese government for the largest development license in the country’s history at 1,060 MW, for which construction is currently under way.

Against this backdrop, WPD anticipates expansion of offshore wind development especially, and it established WPD Japan Co., Ltd. in Tokyo in January 2018. Hereafter, it wants to develop offshore and land wind power plants all over Japan.

For the establishment of its Japanese base, the JETRO Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) provided temporary office space, consultation on registration, introduction of service providers (recruitment agency and real estate agency), information on market and offered business matching services.
