Invest Japan Symposium 2008 in London
Japan, as a Base for High Value Creation

The Invest Japan Symposium 2008 took place on 14th November at Savoy Place, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London. Organised by JETRO, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), the symposium focused on promoting Japan as a base for high value creation.
The symposium attracted 180 business leaders and government officials from the UK and Japan, examining ways to strengthen economic ties between the two countries, and presented the opportunities and benefits of investing in Japan.
Part 1: Opening remarks
Focusing on the rich diplomatic and trading history between the UK and Japan, the opening remarks discussed the pressing need for governments and businesses to work together in order to tackle the current global economic crisis. Japan's attractiveness for investment was outlined and the Japanese government's efforts to improve the business and investment environment highlighted.
Part 2: Keynote speeches
The keynote speeches focused on the importance of international collaboration for the UK to remain one of the world's most open economies, and for Japan to realise its ambitious target of increasing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) year-on-year. The value that inward investment brings such as capital, jobs and a boost to industry competitiveness was outlined and insight into Japan's investment opportunities provided. Steps being taken to stimulate inward investment by Japan's central government and at a regional level were also underlined.
Part 3: Panel discussion
The panel discussion gave each speaker the opportunity to talk about their experiences of doing business in Japan and provide insights into factors that might affect the success of investing in Japan.
The attraction of doing business in Japanese regional areas and cities was discussed, and the key incentives being offered by the local governments were outlined. The panel discussion also highlighted the support offered by JETRO to foreign companies intending to start business operations in Japan.
