Success Stories

GBS K.K.

GBS K.K. is a Japanese subsidiary of GBS German Bionic Systems GmbH, a startup headquartered in Augsburg, Germany, that develops and manufactures next-generation exoskeleton power suit. GBS K.K. was established in Japan in 2018 to manage its business in Japan and East and Southeast Asian markets. Due to the necessity of achieving and maintaining stable productivity, especially in locations with high labor costs, power suit is attracting increasing attention. Also, the COVID-19 crisis has compelled workplaces to operate with fewer workers. The company leads the Robotics as a service (RaaS) industry leveraging its IoT-enabled power suit and supporting software technologies. We interviewed Mr. Hideo Yamashita, Managing Director of GBS K.K., about its initiatives and business in Japan.

“Killing three birds with one stone” by improving work environment with exoskeleton power suit

One of the main reasons for workers' inability to work and absence in the industry field is musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in the lower back. MSD can arise from unergonomic lifting postures exerting uneven stress on the spine or repeated lifting motions. In an aging society such as Japan, employee absenteeism due to MSD results in an economic loss of 7 trillion yen and is a major social problem.

Developed to prevent MSD are exoskeleton power suits (Note 1). German Bionic Systems GmbH ("German Bionic") was founded in 2016 by engineers from KUKA, a German robotics company. The company’s power suit "Cray X" supports the wearer’s back and assists lifting motions with motors, offsetting the lower back burden by up to 28 kilograms. It can operate for up to eight hours with a single, quickly exchangeable standard battery. Compared to competing products, it reduces of the lower back stress by three to five times and operates twice as long.

In addition to its function as a power suit, "Cray X" also works as an industrial IoT equipment connecting with various sensors in industrial settings. It is equipped with WiFi/LTE modems and provides OTA (Over the Air, Note 2) software updates and predictive maintenance. Also, it presents shop floor conditions in visible data and enables users to access, analyze, and update information on employee health management and operational efficiency. The proprietary visor, used in combination with Cray X, protects the worker’s head and displays instructions and shop floor information from the floor manager on the visor screen into the worker’s line of view.

The company developed the world’s first IoT software dedicated to power suits and named it "German Bionic IO." GBS K.K (GBS) has the RaaS (Robotics as a Service) business model, which offers combinations of power suits and IoT solutions in subscriptions from 84 thousand yen per month.

Another strength of "Cray X" is its versatility in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, logistics, aviation, construction, and disaster recovery. It has been adopted by many companies worldwide, such as IKEA, BMW, DB Shenker, and Stuttgart Airport. "The introduction of Cray X reduces the physical strain on employees in the workplace. From business management’s perspective, it eliminates the workforce shortage by expanding the talent pool, such as elderly and female employees. In social terms, it contributes to activating the economy. Thus, it has the effect of killing three birds with one stone," says Mr. Yamashita. Because of its superior technological capabilities and a solid track record, the company received US$20 million in Series A financing led by Samsung Electronics' U.S. CVC "Samsung Catalyst Fund" and MIG AG, a leading German venture capital firm, in December 2020.

Capturing the Asian market from Japan, the center of the robotics industry

GBS, a Japanese subsidiary of German Bionic, was established in Tokyo in 2018. GBS announced its collaboration with Nidec Corporation in October 2019, and jointly displayed at the International Robot Exhibition 2019. In the same year, the company conducted a joint promotion with Bic Camera, and also introduced power suits to Bic Camera’s distribution warehouse.

In addition to the Tokyo office, GBS has an R&D office in AIRBIC, Shin-Kawasaki Sozo no Mori in Kawasaki City, and has received active support from the local government since its expansion into Japan. "AIRBIC houses R&D bases of startups and large companies in various fields, such as biotechnology and robotics. In addition to providing office space, it regularly organizes seminars and networking events for exchanging information. AIRBIC has been extremely helpful in formulating our Japanese business strategies," says Mr. Yamashita.

"The reason why GBS chose Japan as its headquarters for expanding into Asia was that when we looked around the entire robotics industry, many of the industry’s leading companies were Japanese. In the power suit market, Japan was attractive because of some key players here and also the maturity of the market," he continues. GBS is the headquarters for the Asian market, with Japan serving as the international logistics hub. It mainly targets high labor cost countries such as Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, while covering other East and Southeast Asian markets. The company has been successfully marketing products in Japan and other Asian countries and building track records.

Contributing to solving issues at industrial sites in the with- and post-COVID-19 era

With the expansion of work from home and rapid increase in online consumption at home due to the COVID-19 crisis, many mass merchandisers, logistics companies, and their suppliers need to respond to the surging demand by, for example, increasing the number of employees through new hires.

On the other hand, due to social distancing, businesses must operate the workplace with fewer people than in the past. The company believes that power suits will serve as one solution to handle more work volume by fewer workers. “Even in the post-COVID-19 era, GBS power suit and services can contribute to acquiring a stable labor force, participation of female and post-retirement older workers in the workplace, and efficient work management in industrial sites in Japan’s regions suffering from a labor shortage. Its potential in the Japanese market is enormous," Mr. Yamashita forecasts.
