Vietnam Investment Conference
On July 1, JETRO jointly held the Vietnam Investment Conference with the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam under the title "Promoting Cooperation between Vietnam and Japan for Mutual Prosperity and Trust" taking the opportunity of a visit to Japan by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to participate in G20. Prime Minister Phuc also participated in the conference in October 2018.
In his keynote speech, the prime minister stressed, "Vietnam has been achieving high economic growth in the 7% range. JETRO's survey reveals that 70% of Japanese companies operating in Vietnam indicate intention to expand business." In addition, he made a passionate call for Japanese companies to further invest in the country, saying, "The conclusion of an FTA with the EU on June 30 and reforms such as privatization of state-owned enterprises and human resource cultivation have been expanding opportunities for Japanese companies to enter the Vietnamese market."
The conference also featured a ceremony in which permits for new investment into Vietnam were granted and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for investment by Japanese companies were exchanged. In all, 32 projects were officially announced in the presence of Prime Minister Phuc, equaling a total value of seven billion USD. Over four seminars and conferences since June 2017, there has been a total of 105 cases in which investment permits were granted or MOUs exchanged worth a cumulative value of 43 billion USD.
JETRO also concluded a memorandum of cooperation with Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), being signed between JETRO Chairman and CEO Nobuhiko Sasaki and HUST President Hoàng Minh Sơn. JETRO will devote itself to playing a liaison role in cultivating excellent human resources who will assist Japanese companies in doing business in Vietnam through collaboration with HUST.
