Message from the President of JETRO New York, Ken-ichi Kawamoto:

This summer, amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, Tokyo held and concluded the Olympics and Paralympics. Despite the one-year delay, strict policy and regulatory measures placed, and many other unforeseen challenges, the athletes showed an outstanding performance and invigorated us all. On the other end, the Delta Variant greatly impacted the U.S. during the summer, reaching a 7-day average of more than 150,000 cases and 2,000 deaths between the end of August and the beginning of September. Since then, these numbers have gone down, but we still need to approach the fall and winter seasons with caution. On the other end, New York City slowly brings back its liveliness. Restaurants are reopening their doors, and Broadway performances are back. I personally have attended some in-person activities with proper measures.

Since arriving last July, I have met many individuals through online platforms, but meeting some of these individuals in-person certainly provides a better perspective and understanding of our meetings. It also made me realize how important it is to hold in-person meetings in our everyday duties as a government-related organization. Please continue to stay safe, and I look forward to the day we get to meet again.

Ken-ichi Kawamoto

President, JETRO New York

Message from the President of JETRO New York, Ken-ichi Kawamoto:

It has been six months since President Biden took office. The US economy is seeing recovery, as vaccines have been widely distributed throughout the country, and America is back on the world stage under Biden's foreign policy. However, with recent new strains, such as the Delta variant and high inflation, 2021 still has its challenges. On the other end, Japan's economy, such as consumer spending, continues to be impacted by COVID-19.

JETRO USA continues to strengthen the US-JAPAN bilateral economic relationship by getting involved in activities like those in our Spring Newsletter. At JETRO, we continue to ramp up our activities to support and increase bilateral investments.

As summer has entered, we wish everyone to be safe and enjoy the warm weather.

Message from the President of JETRO New York, Kenichi Kawamoto:

It's been one year since the global pandemic began. The pace of vaccination distributions is accelerating throughout the U.S., but we still cannot let our guard down.

Economic activities in the U.S. are gradually resuming, but it is still unpredictable, and there is no telling what will happen in the future. Under these circumstances, we at JETRO USA strive to provide valuable resources and information to you all as promptly as possible. As an example, JETRO's "2020 Survey on Business Conditions for Japanese Companies Operating Overseas" is one of the most comprehensive data we offer regarding Japanese companies' activities in the U.S.

As a result of the COVID pandemic, this unprecedented time has drastically driven people and industries to digitalization. We contribute to invigorating economic exchange between Japan and the U.S. as we flexibly respond to digital transformation and try to cope with these challenging times. We expect that political, economic, and social conditions will keep changing rapidly. However, we will continue to play our role as a bridge between the U.S. and Japan.

As president Biden mentioned, we want to celebrate the 4th of July as an "Independence Day from the virus." Every one of us needs to be cautious and comply with public health measures.

On behalf of all our colleagues at JETRO, I wish you your health and safety.

Message from the New President of JETRO New York, Kawamoto Kenichi:

Greetings to our valued readers,

My name is Kawamoto Kenichi and I am the new president of JETRO New York. I was originally selected from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry for this role, as my previous post was serving as the NY’s Executive Director from 2010-13.

Compared to my previous term, the global landscape has sharply changed due to the impact of COVID-19. We are now seeing partial recoveries in Asia as well as other countries. However, there are plenty of hurdles to tackle as other countries are reporting increasing cases of COVID-19.

Despite certain limitations throughout the Summer-Fall seasons, we worked closely with Japanese companies and US federal, state and, local government officials, curating projects and events that were filled with content related to COVID-19. Since March, JETRO has hosted 67 webinars with a total of more than 35,000 registrants. Our main USA and related websites have garnered over 623,000 unique visitors. We've received 645 inquiries from Japanese companies regarding legal matters related to COVID-19. Our Quick Survey's results regarding Japanese companies impacted in the US from COVID-19 drew significant attention. We will continue sharing these results with members of the US government and local authorities.

Heading into the winter and the New Year, we continue to maintain our position as a facilitator between the US and Japan during these difficult times. Please don't hesitate to reach out to any of our offices in the US should you need assistance.

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Kawamoto Kenichi

Message from JETRO USA President Issei Hatakeyama on the impact of COVID-19:

I hope you and your family enjoyed a restful July 4th weekend as we continue to tackle the fight against COVID-19.

When it comes to the COVID-19 situation in Japan, as of July 14th, the total cases reported were 22,965 and total deaths were 997, according to Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan. While more than 200 cases are being found each day this week, Japan continues to focus on gradually reopening its economy. At the same time, it is being actively discussed how Japanese companies can operate their businesses with COVID-19 in the long-term. The same sentiment is reflected in the surveys we've been working on throughout this pandemic.

In North America, JETRO has held more than 30 webinars, with a wide range of topics such as public assistance programs, explanation of VISA statuses, and various Q&A sessions regarding the impacts of COVID-19.  We will continue organizing business assistance webinars for Japanese companies and we will keep them closely informed on a daily basis by sharing newsletters and updating our website. Provided here is an introduction to JETRO's activities for 2020. If you would like to know more, please contact us.

It is an uncertain and difficult time for all of us. However, please be assured that we at JETRO will continue our very best efforts to support Japanese companies in the United States as well as US companies in Japan by providing factual information and business guidance in a timely manner.

All the best to you and your family from us.

Message from JETRO USA President Issei Hatakeyama on the impact of COVID-19:

First and foremost I hope you, your family, and colleagues are all safe and prepared with necessary resources. To the men and women on the front lines, federal and state officials providing the necessary information to individuals and businesses, and the many essential businesses that are open during this time, we appreciate your tireless efforts and work being done to mitigate this situation as safely as possible.

As we tackle the COVID-19 containment in the USA, JETRO has also taken action to close most of its offices in North America. The New York office officially closed its office on March 23rd, as mandated by the state, and all employees are working from home. While this is unprecedented as a Japanese government organization, it is our duty to maintain interaction with Japanese companies in the US during these uncertain times. Staff at JETRO have been working around the clock to survey and communicate with Japanese companies that have been impacted thus far. To this extent, if you have any questions regarding the Japanese companies in your area or if state officials, EDO's, and other organizations have information they would like us to share with Japanese companies, specifically your state’s response and initiatives for businesses, please reach out and we can assist further. We look forward to working with you.

All the best to you and your family from us.

Hello everyone. My name is Issey Hatakeyama, President of JETRO New York. I am delighted to introduce our new activities platform, Snapshots by JETRO New York, for state and local governments and economic development organizations, as well as companies located in the US. Specifically, JETRO New York’s activities are based in the east coast region showcasing some of the main events we hold, but we also encourage everyone to understand JETRO’s overall activities throughout the US.

As we start this new service, I’d like to extend my invitation to you all, to join JETRO in creating a harmonious relationship between the US and Japan. As some of you know, JETRO has been promoting bilateral relationships between the US and Japan for more than 30 years. Today, we realize this relationship is integral between the two countries, more than ever, and we continue to build a broader communication amongst the public and private community. Our grassroots approach, such as seminars, networking, and personal exchanges, should enhance this bilateral relationship even more.
