Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) is pleased to jointly present with Austrade, a webinar series “Scaling up your business up in Japan – how and why?” commencing on 4 August 2020.
Participation is free and we encourage all Australian companies which have innovative technology and have aspirations to succeed in Japan to participate.
The opportunity for Australian technology to solve complex issues both in Japan and in partnership globally has never been clearer.
Under Abenomics, Japanese Government policies and funding are fostering the development of innovation and technology and attracting technology companies into the Japanese market.
JETRO’s “Invest Japan” strategy is a key initiative which we would like Australian companies to take advantage of.

As a market, Japan has consistently been ranked in the top 3 for investment in research & development globally, spending over 3.0 % of its annual GDP on R&D. Japan was the third highest patent holding country globally in 2018 and in the same year announced more than 1,000 offshore acquisitions totalling a record $191 billion. $26 billion of that total was investment into Australia.
Modelling by the Australian and Japanese Economic Intelligence Institute shows that Japan’s FDI into Australia by 2019 had reached $116 billion. In addition, Japanese portfolio investment into Australia in 2019 was $90 billion, twelve times that from China. And with Japanese companies in possession of more than $890 billion in cash, the scale of investment is likely to continue.
Priority sectors of interest to Japan include areas of strong Australian capability: AI, cyber, fintech, agritech, life sciences, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, mobility, manufacturing, renewable energy, but new, cutting edge Australian technology that solves global problems is all of interest.
The 4 August webinar will include a JETRO presentation on Invest Japan; Joshua Flannery, Rainmaking Innovation Japan, speaking on Startupbootcamp Scale Osaka, and a panel discussion addressing Q & A on the Japanese ecosystem.
Subsequent webinar will include participation by founders and companies succeeding in Japan.
The webinar will be held via zoom.
