2018 Survey Report on Japanese Companies in Southern California

OVERVIEW 

The Japan Business Association of Southern California (JBA) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Los Angeles office have just released the 2018 edition of the "Survey of Japanese Companies in Southern California."


The objective of this survey is to foster better understanding of the business conditions and management environment in Japanese companies doing business in Southern California. The results of this survey shows the great contributions made by Japanese companies to the regional economy in terms of investment and employment. At the same time, it also reveals the business results of Japanese companies in the region as a whole, as well as their challenges to facilitate their business activities.



REPORT SUMMARY

  1. 790 Japanese companies were found in Southern California, contributing to the local economy through the estimate of 117,700 jobs and $10.5billion salaries and wages, including benefits.
  2. Business performance were positive, “Increased in Sales “and “Increased in profit” account for the same or more than previous survey. While “Decreased in Sales” and “Decreased in profit” rose from previous survey. 
  3. The advantages of doing business in California are “Market size”, “Climate”, “Size of Japanese Community”, “Presence of logistics centers” and “Proximity to Japan”. However, “Economic slowdown”, “Labor cost increase”, “Impact of exchange rates”, “Trade friction” and “Strengthening of regulations” will remain as concerns.
