[Press Release] BorgWarner Inc. Announces Strategic Investment in Mie Prefecture, Japan

Mar 30, 2017

Tokyo, Japan March 31, 2017 – BorgWarner Inc. announces new investment in its existing facilities in Mie Prefecture, Japan, with support from JETRO and Mie Prefecture, reflecting BorgWarner’s commitment to growth in the Japanese market. This investment is expected to yield well over 2.5B JPY in new capital expenditures in machinery and equipment including R&D and create new jobs at BorgWarner Morse Systems Japan (MSJ) based in Mie Prefecture. This investment plan was finalized in close collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Mie Prefecture Government.

BorgWarner CEO, James Verrier, explained, “BorgWarner’s continued investment in our Morse Systems Japan business demonstrates our commitment to growth in the Japanese market in support of our customers. This new investment plan will include high-tech and energy efficient manufacturing processes as well as increased production capacities for our leading propulsion systems technologies. We appreciate the support from JETRO to navigate national and prefectural economic policies and continue to find the business environment for supporting FDI in Mie Prefecture to be among the best in the region.”

JETRO focuses on promoting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the Japanese market, which follows the economic growth strategy of the Government of Japan. JETRO is assisting BorgWarner, a leading global automotive parts company with headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan USA by providing information on Japanese national and Mie Prefecture FDI promotion programs as well as the arrangement of meetings with Mie Prefecture officials on behalf of senior BorgWarner representatives.

Mie Prefecture has been attracting more types of facilities from Japan and abroad, which engage in product development and planning; prototyping; and leads other production facilities in the developing foundation centers of advanced manufacturing technologies. Mie Prefecture will support BorgWarner under its policy of supporting Foreign Affiliated Firms to grow existing operations through reinvestment that will enable MSJ to accelerate its growth plans in Mie. This policy includes a financial incentive for capital expenditures – a subsidy which played a decisive factor in BorgWarner’s decision to invest in Mie over alternative locations.

BorgWarner MSJ has been operating in Mie since 1984. This new investment will allow the company to upgrade and grow its existing business presence. JETRO and Mie Prefecture will continue to support BorgWarner new production lines and future R&D operations.
