Implementation of Smart Community Demonstration Projects in California

On September 10, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) to conduct an electric vehicle and energy storage demonstration projects.
The “Demonstration Project for Electric Vehicle Driving Behavior in California” will deploy a network of DC fast chargers to reduce “range anxiety” and will enable EV driving between Monterey and Lake Tahoe. The “Demonstration Project for Validation of Redox Flow Battery in California” will promote the use of energy storage to mitigate the “duck curve” caused by high penetration of renewable energy and enhance grid reliability by installing a battery system at a San Diego Gas & Electric substation. The two projects builds upon the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) signed in September 2014 by California Governor Jerry Brown and Ambassador of Japan, Kenichiro Sasae. The MOC calls for joint efforts to address climate change, renewable energy, trade and investment, zero-emission vehicles, high-speed rail and water issues.
