BACKGROUND OF JETRO'S SUPPORT ON OTOP ACTIVITIES
The One Village One Product movement was originally started in Oita Prefecture in Japan. The purpose of this campaign was to ‚improve upon/refine the locally available resources and produce goods that are acceptable internationallyƒ. Inspired by this idea, the Thai government has been promoting the local industry through the manufacturing of attractive specialty products based on the abundant native culture, tradition and nature. This campaign is called ‚One Tambon One Product (OTOP)ƒ in Thailand because the target area is the administrative unit called ‚Tambonƒ, which is the equivalent of village or town in English.

JETRO launched a one-year programme to support Thailands development of OTOP and promote OTOP products in the Japanese market from January to December 2002. The targeted industries include textiles, wooden products, baskets, ceramics and mulberry papers. In conducting this programme, JETRO has coordinated with the OTOP committee, Department Export Promotion, and other related organizations in Thailand and Japan.
