Industrial Tourism in Japan
Marunaka Suisan
Established in 1909, this former north-sea fishery’s century-long history continues to this day.
The town of Kurobe has produced a large number of cultivated fisheries, but today Marunaka is the only one that remains. Today, Marunaka engages in fishing for sanma, or pacific saury, using nets on sticks, using them to make delicious saury products like Ebisu Sanma Nuka-zuke (preserved saury), which the company also sells. Additionally, as a contribution to the local community, part of the fishing gear storehouse is operated as a reception hall and gallery, called “Hokusen no Yakata,” where visitors can see the changes in fishing boat measurement equipment over time, with free admission to the public.
