Economic Integration in East Asia: The implications for New Zealand business

The Japan External Trade Organisation and the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) held seminars in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch on March 13th and 14th 2008 on deepening of economic integration in East Asia. The presenters and panelists discussed the implications for New Zealand businesses and the role the newly established Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) will play in driving economic integration and sustainable growth in the region.

The seminar provided the first occasion in New Zealand for business people to explore the implications for trade and investment of economic integration in East Asia, under the ASEAN+6 framework.

First proposed at the East Asian Summit in 2005 by Japan, the New Zealand government was an early supporter of this initiative, which it is envisaged, will form the basis of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership in East Asia (CEPEA). The keynote presentations and panel discussion will provide business leaders with an opportunity to learn and exchange ideas about the benefits to New Zealand of membership of a regional grouping that includes China, South Korea, Japan, Australia and India, in addition to the ten ASEAN countries.
