Japan-UK 150th Meiji Restoration Anniversary Memorial Symposium:

Cutting-edge Technologies for a Safe, Secure and Sustainable Future

Jun 07, 2018

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. At the end of Edo period and Meiji period Japan's predecessors carved out a path to a new era. This sesquicentennial celebration gives us an opportunity to recognize their achievements, spirits, and energies as we pass them on to future generations.

In this context, Yamaguchi University will be co-hosting the “Japan-UK 150th Meiji Restoration Anniversary Memorial Symposium: Cutting-edge Technologies for a Safe, Secure and Sustainable Future” with University College London (UCL), Kagoshima University, and Embassy of Japan in the UK.

We who live on this earth are facing huge challenges, including global environmental problems and frequent wide-scale disasters. In these circumstances, carrying on the legacy of the “Choshu Five” and “Satsuma Nineteen,” heroes who made a significant contribution to the process of new nation building using knowledge of science and technology acquired at UCL, it is extremely significant that the three universities which have a deep involvement in Meiji Restoration come together to disseminate our shared message to the world this sesquicentennial celebration year. With a focus on cutting-edge technologies such as space science, remote sensing, environment, and disaster prevention as key topics, the symposium is open to the public and features several experts from Japan and the UK who will speak about the research trends to advance toward a safe, secure and sustainable society.
