Main groups of products imported in Switzerland from Japan are chemicals (18% of total imports), instruments, watches, jewelry (21%), machines, appliances, electronics (16%), vehicles (17%) and precious metals (21%).
Imports of vehicles increased 4.9%, whereas imports of instruments, watches, jewelry (-0.9%), of chemicals (-1.8%) declined. Machines, appliances, electronics remained stable (+0.1%). Precious metals (mostly gold) strongly increased (+113.1%), however gold trade is subject to substantial variations in time as we can see on the following chart.
1.5% of total Swiss imports originated from Japan in 2016. Swiss imports are still mostly coming from the EU ( 55.8%)
Japan is the third largest provider of Swiss imports from Asia (after China and Hong Kong).
