JETRO set up "JETRO Global Connection" (85KB) at CEATEC 2019, Japan's largest exhibition on the theme of CPS/IoT, which was held at Makuhari Messe between October 15 and 18. 34 leading startups from 15 countries and regions were invited. Companies with strong technical skills and high potential for tie-ups with Japanese companies were selected from the 180 applicants, and the exhibiting companies conducted more than 1,600 business discussions in four days.
During the exhibition, a pitching session hosted by the US-based accelerator Plug and Play Japan was held, and out of 47 companies, a total of 9 startups from the JETRO booth participated. In the health tech category on the first day, FREE Bionics Japan, a walking assistance robot developer from Taiwan which also has a base in Japan, won the event. FREE Bionics Japan is a startup from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, which develops and sells walking assistance devices for patients with lower limb disabilities, neurological disorders such as cerebrovascular disease, bone fracture, and Parkinson's disease. Currently, the company is seeking partnership opportunities with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and medical device manufacturers.
In the smart city category on the second day, the 5G/IoT/AI/brand/retail category on the third day, and the mobility category on the fourth day, leading startups that had passed the screening gave their pitches. Participating Japanese companies commented that they were "impressed by the many companies with strong technical capabilities" who exhibited on the JETRO booth. They also stated that "The opportunity to make contact with startups from around the world was very valuable."
