Vietnam Investment Conference during the visit of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc -Exchange of 36 memorandums concerning investment of $21 billion-

June 2017

On June 5, JETRO jointly held the Vietnam Investment Conference in Tokyo with the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment on the occasion of a visit to Japan by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In the keynote address, Prime Minister Phuc introduced the attractiveness of the Vietnamese investment environment and his vision toward economic integration and development of his country’s industries, while also making a passionate call to Japanese companies to expand business in Vietnam. Following that, a panel discussion was held between Prime Minister Phuc, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh and representatives from Japanese companies in terms of deregulation in the service industry and the business environment in Vietnam as well as policies on industry and trade. During the discussion, Prime Minister Phuc expressed his strong commitment toward improving various administrative procedures which were pointed out as obstacles in doing business in Vietnam and promoting mega-FTAs.

In the closing ceremony at the second session of the conference, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made the following promise: “Japan will work with Vietnam to enhance collaboration across the entire spectrum of both markets in Vietnam and Japan under a broad strategic partnership. In line with this, I will also work with Prime Minister Phuc hand-in-hand to further strengthen economic ties between our countries.”

During the conference, three authorization credentials for investment into Vietnam were granted to Japan and 33 memorandums of understanding regarding investment by Japanese companies were exchanged. These investment plans amount to 21 billion dollars.

This conference, which was the largest-ever seminar held in Japan under the theme of investment into Vietnam, was joined by 1,500 people from both countries. In a business network meeting, which was held in tandem with the conference, lively business talks were engaged in by Vietnamese and Japanese business people. The conference ended with heightened expectations for expanded business between the two countries.

Taking these facts into consideration, JETRO will further devote itself to expanding investment and strengthening economic ties between Vietnam and Japan.
