ATPF Working Level Meeting held in Yamanashi
Discussion on potential trade and investment relations
On November 21 and 22 JETRO held the Asian Trade Promotion Forum (ATPF) Working Level Meeting in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture with 29 participants from 21 countries and regions.
The forum, which was established in 1987 at the advocacy of JETRO in order to promote trade in the Asian region, currently consists of trade promotion organizations (TPOs) representing 24 countries and regions. Global human resource development, inter-regional industrial cooperation and free trade agreements (FTAs) were discussed as the themes of this latest meeting. The Exhibition Industry Committee and Investment Working Group were also held, in which future cooperation between members in joint exhibitions and activities for attracting trade were discussed.
Following the Working Level Meeting, the ATPF participants went on a tour of industrial sites throughout Yamanashi.
Held in Yamanashi, location of new JETRO office
JETRO holds the Working Level Meeting every year in a different city from provincial areas of Japan and this time it was held in Kofu City, where JETRO Yamanashi just opened last April.
On the first day of the meeting, November 21, Yamanashi Governor Shomei Yokouchi made an appearance and introduced the charms of the prefecture's local goods, industries and travel locations.
Lieutenant Governor Wataru Hiraide as well as representatives from Yamanashi companies and municipalities and about 50 exchange students from across Asia later joined the ATPF delegates for a reception where the parties were able to interact and exchange information.
Exchange of views on FTAs
In the first ever FTA session at a Working Level Meeting, JETRO started by presenting on the current situation surrounding FTAs in Asia and the status of their usage. This was followed by participants from Australia, China, Thailand and Cambodia introducing their own efforts toward forming FTAs. The presentations helped reaffirm to all present the importance of actively spreading information to companies in order to promote the utilization of these accords.
Additionally, there was constructive debate on supporting global human resource development and matching for inter-regional industrial partnership for firms of all member countries.
Industrial site tour
After the meeting, the participants visited a winery, a jewelry museum and the area around Mt. Fuji, which earlier in the year had just been granted status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At each location they had a chance to hear about efforts to promote local industry through overseas sales of products and use of tourism resources.
