There are about 490,000 foreigners from more than 200 countries living in Tokyo. Tokyo is becoming livable for foreign residents, having many foreign communities and related printed materials available.
Quality of life is ensured with a number of hospitals offering their services in other languages as well as many international schools. The Foreign Residents' Advisory Center provides consultation and advice on concerns related to everyday life.
Business Development Center TOKYO can also provide general advice on housing, hospitals, and other matters related to everyday life for expatriates working for a foreign affiliated company and their families.
There are 13 international schools (*) in Tokyo, where students can get education in English and other foreign languages.(*) The schools are approved by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a miscellaneous category school.
Health services catering to foreigners
Residents can search in English for medical institutions that offer services in various languages (16 languages in total) through Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Institution Information (Himawari). Also, the Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Information Center offers telephone service in five different languages (English, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Spanish) providing information on medical institutions in which patients can receive medical services in foreign languages.
