Strength of the region's industries and economy

Capitalizing on its geographical advantage being the geographical center of Japan and at the cross-point of three economic zones, namely Kinki, Chubu, and Hokuriku regions, Shiga Prefecture has been prospering from ancient times as an important intersection of communication routes. Manufacturing accounts for 35.4% of the prefectural gross production, marking the highest share in Japan. As this makes the prefecture one of the most popular prefectures for manufacturing industries, the prefecture offers locations for companies in a variety of manufacturing industries, such as automobiles, electrical and electronic equipment, and pharmaceuticals, and for a cluster of many R&D bases. Endowed with the rich nature around the Biwako Lake, the prefecture has also been endeavoring to encourage the environmental industry, e.g., water environment business, through the utilization of these companies’ high awareness of the natural environment and environment-friendly technologies.

Outline of Incentives (Requirements etc.)

For companies investing fixed assets of 1 billion yen or more (200 million yen or more in the case of small and medium-sized enterprises), up to 5% of the fixed assets invested will be subsidized within the scope of budget (with the limit of 100 million yen). *Please confirm for details since there are other requirements for subsidies, including employment requirements.
