The population of Sapporo City is approximately 1.95 million, making it the 5th largest city in the country. There are many skilled personnel in this, one of the major cities in Northern Japan. More than 120 companies participate in the Hokkaido Biotechnology Industry Cluster Forum and the forum promotes networking between biotechnology companies, universities, and R&D centers as well as business communications internally and externally. In 2011, Sapporo was the only city in Asia selected as one of 16 unique biotechnology clusters in the world as a result of a survey by the European Commission. It was also graded as a cluster at the mature stage for reasons of high-level research being carried out, enterprise culture functioning, and having enough support for R&D.
