Sakai city has set up a collaborative organization between industry and academy and promotes joint interdisciplinary R&D between the organization and pioneering domestic and overseas researchers. The organization has been conducting cutting-edge research in fields such as radiation, environmental issues, biotechnology, and semi-conductors, while it has been engaged in management and operation of large-scale research facilities including attached radiation facilities and semi-conductor clean rooms.

The city is promoting the development of the Sakaihama Techno Park (SME Cluster) as a base for the small-and-medium enterprises that will support the industries of the next generation, including the electronic component industry. Osaka Prefecture University's industry-academic collaborative setup and the council for industrial revitalization in the Sakai-Takaishi coastal area are located in the park.
The Sakaihama Techno Park (SME Cluster) was founded to support the development of SMEs in the coastal area of Sakai and to strengthen regional industry. 12 companies have located in this techno park.
