Regional Profile

Strength of the region's industries and economy

Saitama city is home to numerous R&D companies and research facilities of major companies that keep on pursuing cutting-edge technologies. In particular, the value of shipments made by equipment and lens manufacturers is ranked first in Japan, with a 13% share of the Japanese market, and the value of shipments made by the pharmaceuticals manufacturers is ranked third in Japan. To make these industrial clusters even more advanced, Saitama City launched “Saitama City Leading-edge Companies Certification and Support Program” to certify companies that are engaged in research-and-development-led manufacturing. Through this project, this city also tries to increase international competitiveness and produce innovation in Saitama.
“Saitama Medical City Plan” was established to support the manufacturing companies to enter the medical device-related industries, and to develop their business.

Saitama City Leading-edge Companies Certification and Support Program

Foreign company(s) operating in the industry

Saitama City supported the expansion of fourteen foreign/foreign-affiliated companies into Saitama City during the nine-year period from April 2005 to March 2015. These foreign companies were attracted to Saitama City by the convenience of transport from Saitama City to the Tokyo metropolitan area and eastern Japan, by the availability of a large pool of skilled personnel, and by the presence of partner companies with excellent capabilities in optics, precision equipment, and life sciences. The area as whole offers in-depth location support and introductions to partner companies through the Saitama International Business Support Center (SBSC), and market access has been highly regarded.
