Strength of the region's industries and economy

Osaka City is a core city in the Kinki region having the following characteristics: 1. accounting for over 25% share of the total wholesale and retailing industry in Japan; 2. boasting a large number of employees and gross products in the service industry, as the core industry in the city; and 3. having a high share in the information communication industry in Japan on par with Tokyo.

Osaka is actively engaged in activities to attract companies. Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly operate the Osaka Business and Investment Center (O-BIC) and provide various types of information, and the IBPC Osaka Investment Promotion Center has been set up as a base for efforts to entice companies to Osaka City through, for example, posting a staff member with foreign-language skills to each entering company. OBIC attracted 464 foreign-affiliated companies in a 16-year period from 2001, the start of the project, to 2016.
