Regional Profile

Strength of the region's industries and economy

Yahata Iron Works, Japan's first modern government-run ironworks, started operation in 1901. It served as a matrix of modernization of Japanese industries. It brought many modernized companies into being such as Yasukawa Electric, an industrial robot manufacturer (1915), and TOTO, a sanitary ware manufacturer (1917). Kitakyushu City developed key industries including steel, chemical, metal, and ceramics. Against this historical backdrop, there is an industrial cluster centered on automobile, semi-conductor and members/materials industries. This robust business climate is drawn from its proximity to other Asian countries, an ample land with a stable supply of water and electricity, low investment costs, and its track record of scarce natural disasters. There are a number of unique environmental industries which utilize one's know-how and experiences of having overcome serious industrial pollution. The city is sharing its environmental technology that they have cultivated with other Asian countries. Furthermore, to advance into the business market, the city has set up conferences under the joint initiatives of private-public sectors to futher promote environmental energy industries.
