Regional Profile

Strength of the region's industries and economy

Triggered by the inauguration of Yahata Iron Works in 1901 as Japan's first national-run ironworks, Kitakyushu City has been a home to many leading companies, e.g., Yasukawa Electric Corporation and TOTO Ltd. Since 1901, the city has been contributing to Japan’s modernization, in particular to the development of iron and steel, chemical, metal, ceramics, and other core industries, and also to clustering a variety of industries in the city, mainly for automobiles, semiconductors, parts and raw materials, which are the industries developed based on the results of the modernization. The city’s industrial success lies in its advantages, e.g., accessibility to other Asian countries, abundant land, secured supply of water and electricity, low investment cost, and robustness against natural disasters.
