Strength of the region's industries and economy

1Fukuoka Prefecture has developed as an economic center for western Japan and provides an attractive environment as a business location for companies focusing on not only Japanese markets but also on those of East Asian. Its GDP exceeds US$220 billion, which is the same size as that of a medium-sized country. Furthermore, the GDP of Kyushu as a whole has reached US$565 billion, representing the 22nd place in the world. With respect to the automobile industry, in particular, Fukuoka Prefecture has grown into a major manufacturing base, boasting production capability of over 1.5 million cars annually, mainly at the leading-edge plants of Toyota, Nissan, and Daihatsu. There is also a brisk clustering of related industries, including parts-manufacturing and R&D bases.

About 400 foreign-affiliated companies have been advancing business operations in Fukuoka Prefecture to date. Although about 40% of the companies are from North America, and about 40% are from Europe as well, an increasing number of companies have been coming from China, South Korea and other Asian nations. Many of these have established sales offices, but there are also production centers, such as plants for automobile parts and medical equipment, R&D centers, and operations with functions as a headquarters in Japan. Many of these foreign-affiliated companies play a key role in competitiveness consolidation, job creation and the globalization of the region for industries in the prefecture.

Fukuoka Prefecture provides consistent support for companies, including: information provision on the market and industry; laws and regulations; real estate, such as offices and factories and residences; and, human resources. It also introduces prospective business partners and provides follow-up services for companies after their relocation to the prefecture.
Under the Business Location Promotion Subsidy Program, Fukuoka Prefecture provides companies with subsidies depending on their investment amount and the size of employment, and many local governments in the prefecture also provide a variety of incentives.
