Regional Profile

Strength of the region's industries and economy

Chiba Prefecture has the advantage of being located adjacent to Tokyo, the national capital, and it is the site of both Narita International Airport, which handles international airline passengers and freight from around the world, and the Port of Chiba, which boasts one of the largest volume of freight handled in Japan. The prefecture also boasts an advanced network of extensive trunk highways, including the Tokyo Bay Aqua-line, making it a superior location for efficient access to Japanese and global markets. Makuhari New City is home to foreign-financed and foreign-owned companies in a wide range of industries, as well as to Makuhari Messe, Japan's largest convention facility, making it an international business city with facilities for work, housing, study, and recreation. The prefecture is home to a number of universities and research institutes, and well-trained human resources are readily available. Working in harmony with clusters of industries in other regions, clusters of alliances among industry, academia, and government are being formed, focused on fields such as industrial craftsmanship, bio- and life sciences, and logistics.

Foreign company(s) operating in the industry

Foreign companies that have chosen to locate in Chiba Prefecture like not only the presence of Narita International Airport and the proximity to the National Capital Region, as well as low land prices and other site-related considerations; they are also attracted by the Chiba Investment Support Center (CISC) and support from local governments.

Comments

Japan is the world’s second largest retail market, ranking third in the world in terms of GDP. In addition to these sufficiently attractive two factors, Japanese people are highly educated and sophisticated. In addition, many Japanese people live in limited spaces. For our company with abundant business experiences in markets where people similarly have limited living spaces (for instance New York, Paris, and London), there is an opportunity to utilize the know-how developed in other countries.

Because consumers in Japan focus on service, it was not sufficient to provide low-cost products, but was necessary to add some service. Products tailored by incorporating the lifestyle and opinions of Japanese people by visiting homes throughout Japan are becoming popular also in the global market. The Japanese market is serving an important role for IKEA’s global growth, and it can be said that the relationship is precisely win-win.

Motivation for selecting region
  • Access from Narita International Airport (international logistics)
  • Access from Tokyo International Airport and central Tokyo (links with clients and Japan headquarters)
  • Despite its proximity to Tokyo, it offers a green and relaxed business environment.
Support provided by local government or JETRO
  • They continuously showed us prospective properties.
  • Invitations to our executives from the JETRO regional support program
Comments

The site is as close as possible to both our headquarters in central Tokyo and Narita International Airport. In addition, we are well served by flights that bring our customers from all over Japan and overseas. Furthermore, the local government and JETRO diligently searched for prospective properties that met the many conditions that we laid down for sites compatible with our clean image. We are extremely grateful for this.
