Regional Profile

Strength of the region's industries and economy

Principal industries
The city's backbone industries, which are basic materials industries such as iron & steel, electric power and food products, are concentrated in the coastal area including Chiba Port. On the other hand, general machinery and metals processing companies are concentrated in the inland area.
Three city centers
There are three city centers driving the city's economy:
  • Chiba City Center, which is the hub of information-related industries, commerce, and business functions;
  • Makuhari New City Center, an area rich in the spirit of innovation and internationalism and endowed with high-level commercial and business functions as well as convention facilities
  • Soga City Subcenter, where commercial and business functions, housing, parks, and many other urban amenities are being established
Thus, these three areas are forming a diverse industrial community.
International economic exchange
The city has entered into economic exchange agreements with Houston City in the United States and Tianjin and Wujiang in China, providing support for mutual entry of companies into each other's market.

Foreign company(s) operating in the industry

With QVC Japan, IBM Japan and many other foreign companies operating in the city, Makuhari New City Center, has been elevating its status as an international business hub. As proved by the expansion of Costco into the area and the establishment of Metro's distribution point in Shinminato in Mihama-Ward, Chiba City's potential is attracting many foreign companies.
