Latest Updates Ministry of Justice: Clarification of requirements for obtaining employment qualifications for people visiting Japan on a business-trip basis
Oct 04, 2017
When a foreigner wants to do business in Japan for a short period of time, if he or she works beyond the scope permitted by the “Temporary Visitor” status for accompanying business matters like negotiations and after-sales services, they will be required to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility and a visa for employment, such as that under the category of “Engineer, Specialist in Humanities/International Services.” Up until now, it has been pointed out that it is difficult to understand the requirements for certification, such as whether or not an employment contract with a company in Japan is necessary to acquire a residence status for visiting Japan on business.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice added Q&A 27 to "inquiries that we receive most often regarding the requirements for applying for employment eligibility (Q&A)" on its website to provide detailed explanations regarding related cases.
Information on employment, delegations, consignment and commissions are included in the section labeled "Contract."
This is a response measure based on discussion by the Working Group for Revising Regulations and Administrative Procedures of the Council for Promotion of Foreign Direct Investment in Japan.
