Jan 04, 2016
Singapore’s popular pork jerky shop chain “BEE CHENG HIANG” will mark its first presence in Japan with its pop-up store at the food event “Meat Festival & Market” in Shinjuku Takashimaya.
BEE CHENG HIANG is an established Singaporean brand founded in 1933 that sells barbecued jerky called “bakkwa”, meaning dried meat in Fujian. The company gained popularity with their handed-down secret recipe for smothering pork over live charcoal without using any artificial seasoning. Its retail network spans over Singapore and 9 other countries in Asia, with more than 300 retail shops till date.
The company has already begun preparations for the opening of its first shop in Japan in 2016, including finding a shop location in Tokyo and recruiting staff. It plans to expand both directly managed shops and franchise shops across Japan in the future.
JETRO Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) has been assisting the company with incorporation, shop location finding and introductions to possible partners including department stores and shopping centers.
