Jul 15, 2016
Ctrip was founded in Shanghai, China in 1999 and became listed on the American stock exchange NASDAQ in 2003. The company acquired 45% and 37.6% shares of leading Chinese online travel agencies Qunar and Elong in 2015, expanding the Ctrip group of companies. Currently, Ctrip has 17 bases in China and nine outside of the country, employing 30,000 personnel internationally. It has grown to become a leading travel brand in China serving about 300 million member customers, mainly in China.
The company established a Japanese corporation, Ctrip Japan, in Tokyo in 2014. It plays the role of a negotiations contact to facilitate collaboration between Japanese accommodations, sightseeing facilities and airline companies. Ctrip acquired the biggest market share of the 4.49 million Chinese travelers to Japan in 2015.
With the relaxation of travel visa requirements by the Japanese government, the number of foreign independent travelers (FIT) is expected to continue increasing in the future. Eyeing the growing necessity to explore new partners in the Kansai region to secure the lodging to accommodate this trend, Ctrip Japan’s hotel operation unit opened a branch office in Osaka in April, 2016.
For the establishment of the Osaka branch office, JETRO supported the company in various ways, including provision of IBSC office space, assistance with finding a location for the branch office and broadcasting a story featuring Ctrip’s expansion in Osaka on JETRO’s TV program “JETRO Global Eye.”
