Nov 10, 2016
UK-based battery materials and licensing company Nexeon Limited officially opened a new office and R&D center in Yokohama, Japan in October 2016. The new facility is Nexeon’s first in Asia and will focus on customer support, applications engineering, and battery and materials R&D. Nexeon chose Yokohama as an investment destination to be closer to the company’s development partners and prospective customers.
Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Oxford in the United Kingdom, Nexeon is developing silicon anode technology for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. The company has patented a unique way of structuring silicon that delivers extended cycle life and significantly increases battery capacity, resulting in lighter batteries with more power and longer lifetime between charges. By improving rechargeable battery technology so that consumers buy fewer single-use batteries, Nexeon aims to make a major contribution to a cleaner environment.
To assist Nexeon with establishing the company’s new facility in Yokohama, JETRO provided information on a range of government policies and incentives related to direct investment and R&D in Japan, introduced key officials at Kanagawa Prefecture and the City of Yokohama, arranged tours of candidate properties, and offered the opportunity to network with leaders from Japan’s public and private sectors.
