Latest Updates 3M establishes research and development center in Sagamihara, Kanagawa
Apr 04, 2014
3M Health Care Limited, a Japanese subsidiary of the US material manufacture 3M that manufactures and sells of stationary, utensil, and industrial components, established a research and development (R&D) center specifically focused on healthcare at its Sagamihara facility in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Previously, the Sagamihara facility had focused on localizing medical products imported from 3M’s overseas locations in the US and elsewhere and offering technical services to customers in Japan. By establishing the R&D center in Sagamihara, the company will gain the capability to develop high value added products that meet diversified medical needs in fields where the company has strengths, such as skin and wound care and infection prevention. For the time being the company plans to domestically distribute products developed at the R&D center, while considering possible distribution to the Asian and global markets in the future.
3M Health Care Limited was established in Japan as a 3M Japan Group company in 1976. The 3M Japan Group considers domestic demand-based industries such as healthcare related businesses to be priority markets and has been investing in these fields actively. The Group decided to establish the R&D center in Sagamihara as part of this investment.
To support the company in setting up the R&D center, JETRO’s Invest Japan Department provided information on incentives and other support programs. 3M Health Care Limited applied and was selected for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2011 Subsidy Program for Projects Promoting Asian Site Location in Japan.
