Jan 15, 2014
In August 2013, US-based First Solar, a leader in the manufacturing of solar panels and development, construction, and operation of solar power plants, established a base in Tokyo.
First Solar manufactures thin film solar module designed for large-scale power generation, and is developing a high efficiency crystalline silicon technology designed for rooftop solar installations. First Solar also develops and sells solar power plants. The company manages all parts of its solar power solutions, from project development to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as well as operations and maintenance (O&M).
Since the company’s establishment in 1999, First Solar has engaged in large-scale power generation projects in various countries around the world, including Germany, Italy, France, Spain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Chile, and the United States. Power production of solar cell modules installed by First Solar has reached a combined total of more than eight gigawatts, which is equivalent to the amount of electric power used by two million households. First Solar decided to establish a base for operations in Japan to support the supply of renewable energy to replenish the loss from non operating nuclear power plants in Japan. In November 2013, the company announced its decision to invest approximately 10 billion JPY in Japan for the development of solar power plants.
To support the company in setting up their Japanese base, JETRO’s Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) provided temporary office space and information on company registration and the market.
