Kanagawa

map

Kanagawa began developing around the port of Yokohama, which the government opened in the 19th century after a long isolation policy. It was one of the first places to adopt overseas cultures as a China town and Western red brick warehouses were built, and it is a popular sightseeing spot. The Yokosuka area used to be a naval port and the shipyard from that time is a designated cultural property. Kamakura is an ancient capital that flourished back in 1192 during feudal Japan, where the Great Buddha and many shrines and temples remain. The Odawara Castle was where the reigning Hojo clan resided during the middle ages and it attracts many tourists as a sightseeing spot. Kanagawa is known for Ashigara tea and is also home to active manufacturers of transportation equipment and chemicals. It also has unique traditional crafts, such as wooden mosaic work from Hakone – a famous hot spring spot – and classic furniture.

Tokyo

map

Tokyo has been the center of Japanese politics and the capital of Japan ever since the Tokyo-based Ieyasu Tokugawa unified Japan in 1603. The Tsukiji Fish Market, known for its marine products, was relocated to Toyosu but continues to thrive by buying and selling tuna and other fresh seafood. Tokyo’s printing business remains active to this day due to being the center of culture and information since olden times. Early modern culture is still strong in Asakusa and other areas, making them popular sightseeing spots. You can find many wholesale dealers in these areas. Artisans gathered in Tokyo over the course of its long history as an urban town, turning it into a home for rare traditional crafts, including silverware, tortoiseshell work, and ivory work. Despite its strong image as an urban town, it is also a producer of unusual vegetables, such as Nerima daikon horseradish and Shinagawa turnips.
